How to write a letter to Santa that sounds like your child
The loveliest Christmas letters sound like the children who write them. They do not need perfect spelling, a long list or a promise to behave. A few words about a wish and a kind thought can become a memory you enjoy looking back on.
Start with four little parts
- A greeting: Dear Santa is a familiar starting point, but your family can choose its own greeting.
- A few wishes: Ask what would make Christmas feel special. Leave room for experiences as well as things.
- A kind thought: If your child wants to, add something kind they would like to do.
- A sign-off: A first name, nickname or simple With love is plenty.
A short example to make your own
Dear Santa,
This Christmas, I wish for a book about animals and a day baking with my family.
I would also like to help someone feel included in our games.
With love, a little dreamer
Use this as a starting point, then change the words. Your child might prefer dinosaurs to animals, a walk to baking or a wish you would never have thought of. Their own wording matters more than matching an example.
Try wishes beyond presents
If a child is stuck, ask what they would like to learn, where they would like to go together or who they would like to spend time with. A picnic, a hug, a story at bedtime or a new adventure can sit alongside a toy on the list.
Kindness can be small too: share a game, make a card, help someone or listen to a friend. Wish2Santa includes optional prompts, but a child does not have to add one. There is no naughty-or-nice score.
Let younger children lead
A grown-up can type while a child talks. Read the words back and ask whether they sound right. Keep the list short enough to enjoy making it, and let the child choose the letter paper. Older children can edit the wording themselves.
Keep expectations gentle
A wish is a dream, not a promise. Families have different budgets, traditions and reasons for celebrating. You can say that the letter helps the family understand a child’s hopes without promising that everything on it will appear.
When the words are ready, print the letter or keep a downloadable copy. You can also email it to someone in your family. Creating the letter does not send it to a real Santa address.
